New Vineyard

Innovation in viticulture: new farming systems and multifunctional strip grassing.

New Vineyard project

New Vineyard: The project focusing on innovative sustainable viticulture systems

New Vineyard was founded by five partners with organic viticulture expertise to create a new vine training and management system that improves organic grape production and reduces the vineyard’s environmental impact.

In this new system, called high cane, the screws grow between 1.10 m and 1.80 m, resulting in a greater distance from the ground than normal breeding techniques. The limited height development of the vines makes it possible to control shoot growth, stimulate female development, slow berry ripening and mitigate risk of frost damage.

In addition to this, New Vineyard promotes the planting of flowering plants sown in the sub-row and inter-row of the vines. This allows for greater microfauna complexity, controls erosive phenomena, and reduces environmental impact by limiting mechanical means and fuel usage.

Finally, the project tests a shielding net that can protect bunches of grapes from hail and extreme weather events.

Project partners: the New Wine Growers Operating Group.

Az. Agr. Cantori Roberto, leader of the New Vineyards project, manages a specialized vineyard area of 5 ha, located in Apiro (MC), where he produces and processes his own grapes. Together with Az. Agr. Dottori Edoardo, the lead partner puts the company vineyard at the disposal of NEW VINEYARD to host the trials on the sowing of the different types of herbaceous essences for the constitution of the multifunctional grass cover (STRIP COVER), and to test the new HIGH CANE training system associated or not with the GRAPE NET device. He will also, in agreement with partner UNIVPM, attend to all stages of vineyard ripening and harvest to assess the adaptation of vines to the newly introduced systems. Dr. Roberto Cantori
